Grocery shoppers enjoy self-checkout for its convenience, but Costa Mesa is considering a new law that would cause higher prices and longer lines at grocery stores

Self-Checkout Restrictions Will:

Cause self-checkout options to close
Increase your grocery bill
Lead to longer lines at the store
Do nothing to deter retail theft
Put grocery store employees in danger
Allow for government overreach into store operations

…All while disrupting the self-checkout process

If Costa Mesa limits self-checkout, grocery stores will be forced to raise their prices and/or eliminate self-checkout altogether.

Please Reject Restrictions on Self-Checkout

Dear Mayor Stephens and City Council Members,

I am writing as a Costa Mesa resident to oppose the proposed ordinance restricting self-checkout at grocery stores.

This regulation would eliminate a convenient option that many of us use regularly, while making groceries more expensive at a time when costs are already too high. The city's own data shows retail theft at grocery stores has decreased, so this appears to be a solution in search of a problem.

Long Beach's experience proves these restrictions don't work—stores simply shut down their self-checkout lanes entirely, leaving shoppers with fewer choices and longer lines.

Please vote NO on this ordinance and preserve consumer choice in Costa Mesa.
